Surgical FAQs
At PetCentre Animal Hospital, we want you to feel confident and informed when it comes to your pet’s care. Below are some common questions about our veterinary surgery process and what you can expect before, during, and after your pet’s procedure.
Is anesthesia safe for my pet?
Modern anesthesia is safer than ever, especially with the advanced monitoring and individualized protocols we use at PetCentre Animal Hospital. Before any procedure, we perform a full physical exam and recommend pre-anesthetic blood testing to check that your pet’s liver, kidneys, and other vital systems are functioning properly. We offer three levels of in-house diagnostics and tailor our approach based on your pet’s age, health, and risk factors. For senior or medically complex patients, we may also recommend additional testing such as ECGs or X-rays to ensure safe surgical outcomes.
NOTE: Please withhold food for 8–10 hours before surgery; water is allowed until the morning of the procedure.
Will my pet have stitches?
Some pet surgery services use absorbable sutures placed beneath the skin that dissolve on their own. Others—especially mass removals—may require external stitches, which are typically removed 10–14 days after surgery. We’ll let you know what type of closure was used and walk you through incision monitoring, activity restrictions, and aftercare. In most cases, bathing should be avoided for at least 10 days, and pets should be prevented from licking or chewing at the surgical site.
How is my pet’s pain managed?
Pain management is a priority in every surgical plan. Even if pets don’t show pain the same way humans do, they still feel it—and we treat it accordingly. We use safe, modern pain relief tailored to the procedure and the patient. Dogs may receive anti-inflammatory medications before and after surgery, while cats benefit from updated feline-safe protocols, including injections and oral options when appropriate. We also use injectable medications, nerve blocks, and, in some cases, narcotic pain patches to ensure your pet remains as comfortable as possible throughout recovery.
Can other procedures be done during surgery?
Yes. While your pet is under anesthesia, we can perform additional services such as dental cleanings, ear exams, or microchip placement. These procedures can often be done safely and efficiently during the same anesthetic event. Let us know in advance if you’d like an estimate or want to authorize additional care.
What happens when I drop off and pick up my pet?
Plan to spend 5–10 minutes during check-in to review paperwork, discuss surgical options, and confirm any additional services or testing. When it’s time to go home, we’ll review post-op instructions and answer any questions about recovery. We’ll also call you the evening before your appointment to confirm details and ensure you’re fully prepared.
